When you need an AC repair company either your air conditioner has stopped turning on or stopped cooling. However, before you decide to call an air conditioning repair expert, there are a few simple things you can try at home to fix the issue.

Things to Check Before Calling an AC Service Company that will Save You Time and Money

Check the Disconnect Switch on Your Air Conditioner

This is a common issue we see typically when a customer first starts up their AC for the season. Luckily this requires no AC service at all, it’s just that the power needs to be turned back on. Walk outside and look for the power switch on your air conditioner. Its located inside a metal box and will usually either have a handle that you pull out or an actual on/off switch. Try resetting the disconnect to see if your AC will turn on.

Check Your Thermostat

Make sure that your thermostat is functioning properly. When you change a setting, you should see the display screen light up. If you don’t see anything displayed on the screen, then change out the batteries. Next, make sure that you have set the thermostat to cool mode and wait for a minute or two for your air conditioner to kick on.

Check Your Air Filter

I can’t tell you how many times we’ve been called out for an air conditioner service when the issue was as simple as a dirty air filter. When you have a dirty air filter, it can restrict the airflow and cause your system to freeze up and malfunction. If you have changed the filter and your AC still isn’t working, check that the unit isn’t frozen. You can do this by pulling back the insulation on the lines that run into your home. If the unit is frozen then wait a few hours before trying to turn it on again.

Check Your AC Drain Line

Many people think they need an AC service when their air conditioner drain line has clogged up but they don’t realize it. Several AC’s are equipped to shut off if the drain pan is clogged and overflowing. This is to prevent damage to the floors or ceiling in your home. This is usually a simple fix. Just empty the drain pan and flush out the line to make sure it’s draining properly.

Call a Certified Expert

If you’ve checked all of the things above and have determined that you still need an air conditioner service, give us a call and we’d be glad to help you.
