Top 5 Air Conditioner Brands of 2019
When it comes time to purchase a new air conditioner, there are several things to consider. One of the most important things being the brand. Although all manufacturers basically create the same product, not all brands are created equal.
Things to Look for in an Air Conditioner
So how did I determine which brand was the best? Well for starters, I researched to figure out what characteristics consumers believe a good air conditioner consists of. Then, I compared these characteristics to the brand names.
One of the most important factors that customers say they considered, is the life expectancy of the air conditioner. I have found that some brands actually do last longer than others. However, in general, the average air conditioning units last between 10-15 years, according to cnn.com.
Warranties make up the second most desired factor in a good air conditioner brand. Warranties are great because even if your air conditioner doesn’t last as long as the average unit, the manufacturer promises to cover it for a certain amount of additional time. Obviously, the longer the warranty, the more desirable the brand.
Just like you would consider the features when buying a new car, you would want to consider the features that each air conditioner brand offers. For example, some brands boast that their products range from different efficiency and speeds while others have advanced monitoring technology to aid in diagnostics.
The 4th most important consideration for purchasing a new air conditioner according to consumers, is the cost. Some brands are known for being more budget friendly, while others are more expensive. It’s important to weigh the first 3 considerations when deciding how much your willing to spend.
We ranked Goodman as the very best brand for air conditioners because you can get the best warranties and features, without paying more.
Longevity– Goodman brand AC’s last the typical length of most air conditioners, with a life expectancy of 10-15 years.
Warranty– Goodman is known to have some of the best warranties on the market for their furnaces and air conditioners. Many of their models have lifetime compressor warranties, as well as 10 year unit replacement. They also offer a 10 year warranty on all other parts.
Features– Goodman has 5 different models with single-stage and two-stage capabilities as well as efficiency options ranging from 14 SEER to 19 SEER. Goodman also features ‘Comfortbridge, communicating technology’. This technology optimizes efficiency and performance as well as makes diagnosing issues much easier.
Cost– Goodman is the most budget friendly brand on this list with the average air conditioner plus installation ranging from $2,400-$4,100.
Amana is ranked #2 on our list because they are made by the same people who manufacture Goodman products so they have similar features and warranties. The only difference is that they do offer a few more advanced features and efficiency options, which makes them a little more pricey than their more budget friendly counterpart.
Longevity– Amana has a typical life expectancy of most air conditioner brands, with a life expectancy of 10-15 years.
Warranty– Since they are created by the same company as Goodman, they have the same warranties. Many models have a lifetime compressor warranty, and 10 year unit replacement. Most parts are covered for 10 years as well.
Features– This is where Amana starts to differ from Goodman. They have eight different models with single-stage, two-stage, variable speed capabilities as well as efficiency options ranging from 13 SEER to 20 SEER. They also have models with Comfort Bridge Communicating technology. They are known for having quieter fans as well.
Cost– Because Amana is known as the more ‘high end’ brand compared to Goodman, it does cost a little bit more. The average air conditioner plus installation ranges from $2,600-$5,200.
Trane came in third place for best air conditioner brands, because like Goodman and Amana, they are known for being reliable and long lasting. However, their price, makes rank lower than the first two.
Longevity– Trane air conditioners are known to last closer to the 15 years. They are known for their saying, “You can’t stop a train.”
Warranty– Trane offers warranties on their parts and equipment that ranges from 1 years to 20 years. On certain equipment they offer lifetime compressor warranties as well.
Features– Trane is also known to have quiet fans on their variable speed models. They also offer equipment with efficiency ratings between 14.5 SEER up to 22 SEER.
Cost– Trane ranks in the middle of this list because of the price is higher than most competitors. For an air conditioner plus installation, it will cost you between $4,800-$6,800.
I put Carrier on this list because they do have most components that make up a good air conditioner according to consumers. However, I ranked them as number 4th because their warranties are limited.
Longevity- Carrier has a typical life expectancy of most air conditioner brands, with a life expectancy of 10-15 years.
Warranty– The maximum warranty that Carrier offers on their parts and compressors is only 10 years. And, if there is a change of homeowners, then it is only 5 years.
Features– Carrier offers several air conditioner models that range from 13 SEER up to 21 SEER. They also offer communicating technology called ‘Greenspeed Intelligence’, which is similar to Goodmans ‘Comfortbrige Communications.’
Cost– Carrier falls in the middle price range. With a new air conditioner plus installation, ranging from $3,400-$6,800
Lennox falls into the 5th place here because their warranties and features can be found with many other brands. However, if something breaks down, you have to go through Lennox specifically to get any replacement parts or equipment and sometimes it can take weeks. They are the only brand that do not offer interchangeable parts.
Longevity– Lennox has a typical life expectancy as well. Ranging from 10-15 years.
Warranty– Lennox offers warranties ranging from 5-20 years for parts and equipment depending on the model you purchase.
Features– They manufacture both single stage and two stage models. On their ‘high end’ models, they even go up to 26 SEER efficiency. They also have ‘Precise Comfort’ communicating technology on their ‘high end’ models. .
Cost– Lennox falls into the middle to high price range as well with a new air conditioner plus installation ranging anywhere from $3,100-$7,300.
Finding the Right Contractor
You may decide to purchase the very best brand of air conditioner with the highest efficiency rating and features, but if you don’t get it installed properly, then you’re better off with your old used system.
I say this because getting your new air conditioner installed by the right contractor, can make it or break it. For example, you could purchase an Amana 20 SEER, two stage air conditioner, but if your installer doesn’t properly seal all of the ducts that same air conditioner would only be as efficient as a 16 SEER single stage.
So if you remember anything from this article, remember this, choose a great contractor!
